Our History

The Newby Foundation is a non-profit organization established by Dr. Keith H. Newby, a renowned cardiologist in Hampton Roads, with a goal of promoting community health through funding and promoting research focused on cardiac disease and related chronic illnesses, and by providing assistance to individuals in need throughout Virginia, irrespective of their race, color, or national origin.

The foundation aims to address the dearth of awareness, knowledge, and solutions regarding cardiac disease and related chronic illnesses in the Virginia community by:

  • Encouraging innovative thinking, new technology, and increased collaboration

  • Raising funds to support education and research initiatives that specifically target heart disease and related chronic illnesses

  • Disseminating state-of-the-art information and educational tools to scientists, doctors, patients, advocates, and donors

  • Establishing partnerships to help patients and survivors live longer, fuller lives

The foundation was established in memory of Dr. James E. Newby, Jr., a prominent internist in Hampton Roads who passed away at the age of 41 due to a primary cardiac tumor. Dr. Newby served as chief of Medicine at Norfolk Community Hospital and was the first African-American board-certified internist to obtain privileges at Norfolk General Hospital. He was also the first African- American appointed as a member of the Norfolk City Planning Commission.

A member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and several other social and community activist groups, Dr. Newby maintained a strong sense of commitment to his community, which he instilled in his children.
